Volunteering

No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor is given by what the person gave. - Calvin Coolidge

Volunteers in the National Forests

Volunteers are the heartbeat of the Forest Service. The types of work a volunteer can perform are many and varied; the only tasks a volunteer cannot carry out are those associated with law enforcement.

Why Volunteer

Volunteering with the Forest Service lets you see what our national forests offer in ways beneficial to both you and the Forest. The commitment you make is up to you. You can:

  • Pursue a special interest such as bird watching or hiking
  • Diversify your job experience and career choices
  • Earn credit towards college with volunteer internships
  • Live on a national forest while you volunteer
  • Perform vigorous but satisfying physical labor outdoors
  • Meet people and form new friendships
  • Provide community service

Your talents and skills are matched with your work preference to obtain a role that satisfies you and best fulfills the mission of the Forest Service. You may work on a part-time or full-time basis. You can participate in a one-time project or serve over several months, seasons, or year-round.

How To Apply

You can apply for a volunteer position by completing an application form and then emailing, faxing, or mailing it to the Umpqua National Forest volunteer coordinator: Coral Bailie, cjbailie@fs.fed.us, 541-957-3425, Umpqua National Forest, 2900 NW Stewart Parkway, Roseburg, OR 97470
