Evidence-Based Practices: Shaping Mental Health Services Toward Recovery

Printed versions of the Toolkits are currently out of stock. All of the toolkits can be downloaded directly from our web site.

Dear Colleague:

In furthering the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) commitment to promote evidence-based practices, one or more of the Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Implementation Resource Kits are being sent to you at your request. Please note that these are the “evaluation editions” of the Kits and are therefore drafts. We would like to receive comments and suggestions from you for further refinement and are particularly interested in the usefulness and effectiveness of the Kits - what works and what doesn’t work for you.

The development of the Resource Kits for these five practices is one of several SAMHSA’s Center for Mental Health Services’ activities focused on encouraging the use of evidence based practices in mental health. We expect to identify additional evidence-based practices to develop into Resource Kits in the future. Obtaining widespread adoption of these and similar effective practice interventions is at the center of SAMHSA’s services improvement mission and a major part of achieving its strategic goals of accountability, capacity and effectiveness. Although rigorous testing of the Resource Kits will not be completed until a National Demonstration ends in 2005, SAMHSA expects that the Resource Kits will be found to be effective tools for promoting change and helping States to implement EBPs.

We appreciate your comments and input about the Resource Kits. It would be particularly helpful to us if you could respond to the questions listed in the attached document within the next 6 months.

The development of these Kits is one of several SAMHSA activities critical to our Science-to-Service agenda. Thank you for taking the time to review them.

Sincerely,

A. Kathryn Power, M.Ed.,
Director
