The recommendation appeals to scientific publishers, editors and reviewers dealing with papers on biodiversity to:
- recognize and promote the value of publishing datasets with standardized metadata,
- publicise the proposed ‘Global Biodiversity Resources Discovery System (GBRDS)’ as a mechanism for registering and publishing metadata of datasets, and
- promote the registration of metadata for datasets used to produce research publications and the use of GUIDs (Globally Unique Identifiers) for them through the GBRDS or similar data discovery mechanism.
The recommendation further appeals to research councils, other funding agencies and private foundations as well as scientists and biodiversity data generators, aggregators, curators, custodians and publishers to contribute towards this goal.
The draft of the recommendation is now open for comment by the Participants, to be followed by its inter-sessional adoption. The Secretariat is also seeking inputs towards possible mechanisms to implement the recommendation amongst the various stakeholder groups. Comments/suggestions may please be communicated to Vishwas Chavan, Senior Programme Officer for DIGIT (email: vchavan@gbif.org)
