Volunteers Receive National Forest Service Award

ASHEVILLE, NC - Jacquelyne Adams and Sandra Baker, both with the U.S. Forest Service, Southern Research Station, received national awards for their outstanding volunteer efforts in Asheville and surrounding communities. The award was presented in Asheville earlier this year by Station Director Pete Roussopoulos on behalf of the national Senior, Youth and Volunteer Programs office. They were recognized for “the importance and value of the volunteer work accomplished, and the public service provided by volunteers.”

Adams was lauded for her efforts to recruit student volunteers who identify plant species and locate and quantify fruit for research conducted at the Bent Creek Experimental Forest and on the Pisgah National Forest. Baker was recognized for her work with local Boy Scouts – Cub Scout Pack 75 and Boy Scout Troop 75 – who built and maintain the Centennial Interpretive Trail at Bent Creek.

“Jacquelyne and Sandra’s dedication to volunteerism is admirable,” said Roussopoulos. “Their volunteers have helped the Station to complete projects enjoyed by many visitors to the Asheville area. We value their commitment to helping others, while also enhancing the Forest Service’s mission.”

Adams, a research forestry technician, is the volunteer coordinator at Bent Creek in south Asheville. She is actively involved in recruiting forestry-related students from surrounding schools and colleges, including Asheville High School, University of North Carolina – Asheville, Haywood Community College, Mars Hill, Warren Wilson, and Western Carolina University. Students have also been recruited from Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Volunteers are involved in a variety of activities at Bent Creek, including assisting with technology transfer and working with technical specialists.

Baker, an office automation assistant at Station headquarters in north Asheville, has been very active with the Boy Scouts of America for nine years, including Den Leader, Webelos Leader, and committee member for both the Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop. She has worked with the Scouts on several projects for local charitable organizations, and also regularly participates with the Order of the Arrow, a Boy Scouts national honor society.
