Fire & AviationWildland Firefighters MonumentPrineville, OregonOn July 6, 1994, during the South Canyon Fire on Storm King Mountain near Glenwood Springs, Colo., 14 wildland firefighters lost their lives, nine of whom were crew members of the Prineville Hotshots of Prineville, Ore. The Wildland Firefighters Monument was conceived by the parents of the nine Prineville Hotshots. The Monument honors all past, present and future wildland firefighters, and was dedicated at Ochoco Park in Prineville, Oregon on June 15, 1996. The bronze memorial, which portrays firefighters in the clothing, tools, and equipment used in the 1994 fire season, is one and one-quarter life size and is set on a 3-foot high stone base. It was cast by sculptor David Nelson of Marble, Colorado, and is 14 feet long, 8 feet wide and 11 feet high.
