When she was 11-years-old, Holly Swisher decided that getting a PhD in math would be the most fun, challenging career she could imagine. And although she wasn’t fully aware of gender issues at the time, she had a sense that girls didn’t usually pursue careers in math.

In February 2007, my research was highlighted in OSU’s Terra Magazine. Of course, I made sure that my mom had a copy. As she looked over the article, she read the caption for the Edward Curtis photograph gracing the cover of the magazine. “Nuktaya?”, she asked, “There wasn’t anyone on the island named Nuktaya. I wonder if they meant, ‘Muktoyuk’, my father?”

The Oregon State University’s Women’s Center has just produced a “Calendar of Hope,” which features OSU students, staff and faculty talking about a very special dream. Each was asked to compete the phrase, “When Violence Against Women and Children Ends… I will…” For every woman asked, the answer was different, but equally enthusiastic.

Rebecca Farrin is one of six graduate students currently enrolled in the new Master of Arts in Contemporary Hispanic Studies program at Oregon State University, and her master’s project is creating a documentary about the lives of the Peruvian shepherds she met while helping local ranchers in Idaho.
