Dedicated to Water Quality

Employee: Tom Pick
Location: Bozeman, Montana
Employee Job Title: Water Quality Specialist

Tom Pick has been protecting Montana's water quality for almost 20 years. In that time, Tom has been instrumental in building partnerships between agencies and landowners to ensure our water is clean and protected.

Tom is the State Water Quality Specialist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and is located in Bozeman. His passion for conservation extends beyond his role as a public servant. He has been very active in the Soil and Water Conservation Service (SWCS) for years and is a past president of the Montana SWCS chapter. This kind of activity requires untold hours of hard work outside the scope of his regular duties.

"I grew up in a place in the country with poor water quality," said Tom. "I've enjoyed working with people to recognize the blessing of Montana's clean water and help protect it."

Recently, Tom represented NRCS at the 2007 SWCS Annual Conference in Tampa, Florida. There, he presented a paper on his innovative digital riparian assessment of the Brown's Gulch watershed using a Personal Data Assistant (PDA) to record data. This process makes it possible for an NRCS conservationist to instantly access watershed-level resource information while developing a conservation plan for a private landowner. Cutting edge work like this makes NRCS a leader in conservation planning and application.
