Methamphetamine use has generated much concern because of its ready availability and the severity of its effects on the user. Drugs in the Heartland: Methamphetamine Use in Rural Nebraska describes Rural Nebraska ADAM, a pilot outreach project of NIJ's Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring (ADAM) program, which studied methamphetamine use and trafficking among arrestees in four rural Nebraska counties and the city of Omaha. This NIJ Research in Brief compares user demographics, use patterns, treatment needs, availability, and selling and manufacturing in rural areas and the city. Project findings confirmed what officials had suspected: Drug use in rural Nebraska looked much like the city of Omaha; however, differences were also found. Implications for drug control in rural areas, including those related to law enforcement and treatment policies, also are discussed.
