Agriculture and Food Research Initiative - Bioactive Food Components for Optimal Health

The consumption of a nutritious diet is important for maintaining long-term health and decreasing the risk for chronic disease. The primary objective of this program is to support research to improve our understanding of the role of nutrients and other biologically active components in foods in promoting health throughout the life cycle, including pregnancy, early development and growth, and aging. Projects that support the update of Dietary Reference Intake recommendations are especially encouraged. Program objectives are relevant to the research recommendations outlined in the Report of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2005 and to the Dietary Reference Intakes Research Synthesis published by the National Academy of Sciences. This program makes both single function research and education awards.
