Utah BLM manages energy resources on 23 million acres of surface acres and 32 million of subsurface acres. Energy production on Utah’s public lands plays an important role in meeting the energy demands of the region. Utah is a net exporter of both coal and natural gas. Last year, Utah produced 304 billion cubic feet of natural gas, enough to heat 4 million homes for one year. Along with historically energy-producing areas located on the eastern side of the state, other areas in the State are showing new promise for potential reserves.

Americans enjoy a quality of life today that depends largely upon a stable and abundant supply of affordable energy. The Federal energy mix managed by the BLM in Utah includes oil and gas, coal, oil shale and tar sands and increasingly, renewable sources of energy such as wind and geothermal (Utah has two geothermal power plants-- one of which is shown to the right).
