SARE's series of eight 'Fresh from the Farm' notecards showcases beautiful
agricultural images by photographer Jerry DeWitt. Each 4 ½ x 6
¼ card displays a brief message about ways to support sustainable
agriculture in the marketplace.
If your organization would like to spread the "buy sustainable"
message, considering buying them in bulk. Each card has space on the back
for your logo. Purchase notecards.
Farmers markets provide an opportunity to talk directly with the people
who grow your food. To find a farmers market near you, see www.ams.usda.gov/farmersmarkets.
Community and school gardens serve as green -- and educational --
backdrops for community gatherings. To find a garden near you, contact
your city, town or school district representative.
Buy "shares" in a CSA farm to receive fresh fruit and vegetables throughout
the season. CSA members accept part of the financial risks of farming
and enjoy access to "their" farms. To find a CSA farm near you, see
www.sare.org/csa.
Buying fruit and vegetables at pick-your-own farms and roadside stands
gives you access to the freshest produce. Trips to a farm make excellent
educational outings. To find a pick-your-own farm near you, contact
your state Department of Agriculture's marketing division.
Buying organic products supports farmers who use renewable resources
to protect soil, water and air. Look for "USDA organic" labels when
shopping.
Ask grocery and restaurant managers to buy sustainably produced food.
See www.foodroutes.org to find
sustainably grown food produced near you.
Seek alternative sources for buying meat, such as from ranchers who
raise livestock on pasture. Ask local Extension educators for leads.
Explore on-line options for sustainably grown products, which also
make great gifts. Search on-line for farmers who emphasize environmental
stewardship, fair labor standards and community development.
