PNW 010: Drinking Water and Human
Health
|
The health and livelihood of Americans depends on the availability of a safe drinking water supply. Increasing water demands from a growing population, economic expansion and increasing use per capita mean that we need to emphasize the wise use, proper management and protection of this resource. The four land grant universities provide many research-based educational materials on drinking water and human health. PNW 009: Pacific Northwest Water Web
|
Our regional website is up and running. This 2-page flyer summarizes how to use this website to learn about research, outreach, and institutional programs in water offered by the land grant universities in the Pacific Northwest. PNW 008: Nutrient and Pesticide Management
|
Pesticide and fertilizer use is almost everywhere across
the Pacific Northwest's developed and agricultural landscapes.
Environmental pollution can occur when these chemicals enter
waterways and groundwater systems. The universities provide
many research-based educational materials on soils, plant choices,
irrigation management techniques, proper fertilizer and pesticide
use, and a range of other related topics. View

PNW 007: Living on the Edge: Grassroots
Watershed
Planning in the PNW
|
Cooperative Extension sites across the PNW were recently
linked so attendees could discuss and learn about collaborative
processes for watershed restoration and protection. This program
was developed to energize and inspire participants by demonstrating
how other successful groups have organized and worked together
to address specific issues. View an HTML version of the flyer here or download
the informational PDF flyer here. |
PNW 006: Research and Extension Regional
Water Quality Conference
|
This conference was the first of its kind in the region and
provided an excellent opportunity for research, extension, and
agency personnel to exchange information on water quality issues
in the Pacific Northwest. View an HTML version of the flyer here or download
the informational PDF flyer. PLEASE NOTE: The URL for
the conference summary has changed on the printed version since
publication. The correct address is now

PNW 005: Animal Waste Management
|
The potential for transport of nutrients and pathogens from
livestock and dairy production operations to the environment
is a significant issue in the Pacific Northwest. Adoption of
animal waste best management practices can reduce this transport.
The PNW Regional Water Quality Program provides a broad range
of research-based educational materials devoted to animal waste
management and utilization. Cooperative Extension regularly
conducts outreach programs with livestock producers on a wide
range of best management practices. View

PNW 004: Making Riparian a Household
Word
|
Cooperative Extension faculty and staff work with landowners
every day on issues affecting their lives and livelihoods. This
provides many opportunities for educating landowners about the
role of riparian areas to protect streams. One tool that the
PNW Regional Water Quality Program has produced is a series
of educational publications about protecting streams. The publications
relate land management practices with riparian areas, focusing
on streamside vegetation native to the different bio-regions
of the Pacific Northwest. View an HTML version of the flyer here or download the informational PDF flyer here.
This program also includes the development of nine educational riparian publications with the theme of "taking care of streams." Specific publications are targeted at suburban homeowners, range managers, rural landowners, recreationists, farmers, land developers, and foresters. Voluntary Monitoring Education
|
A 15-hour short course on voluntary water monitoring by local
citizens was delivered in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho with
the support of USDA-CSREES funds in 1999-2000. The course includes
eight hours of classroom training and seven hours in the field
doing physical, biological, and chemical assessments of surface
waters. Evaluations by participants and requests for the curriculum
showed the success of the course. View
