Concepts, Terms and Context

The Invasive Alien Species Concepts, Terms and Context (IAS-CTC) database shows how specific terms associated with 'alien' and/or 'invasive' species are defined in particular contexts. In this 'proof of concept' prototype, you will find terminology from scientific, policy, legal and other literature. Terms and their definitions, together with synonyms or near-synonyms and contextual notes, have been extracted from a variety of important and/or representative documents. The records illustrate that the same terms may be used differently by different communities of interest, and/or that different communities may use different terms for the same concepts.

The IAS-CTC database includes definitions from agreements, conventions and standards from the following international organizations:

  • Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
  • Secretariat of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC)
  • World Conservation Union (IUCN)
  • World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE)
  • World Trade Organization (WTO)
