The Department of Veterinary Science was established in 1915. The research efforts have evolved to a specialization in the horse because of the University's location in the Bluegrass region, and federal and state support. Today the department is a world leader in Veterinary Science research using the horse as its primary subject. Research has been enhanced with growing private and industry support. In 1984, the late Maxwell H. Gluck contributed $3 million toward the development of an equine research center. These funds were matched by the state and the horse industry. The result is the $9 million Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center, which opened in 1987 and houses the Department of Veterinary Science. The Gluck gift stimulated the equine industry and served as a catalyst for the creation of the University of Kentucky Gluck Equine Research Foundation, Inc., a 501c3 corporation, which has established a continuing partnership between the University and the equine industry. The dual purpose of the Foundation is to facilitate the exchange of information with the equine industry and to secure funding for equine research at the University of Kentucky. The University of Kentucky Gluck Equine Research Foundation has been successful in its efforts to provide the format to disseminate information to and from the horse industry. Through the collaborative efforts of the University of Kentucky Department of Veterinary Science, the UKGERF Board of Directors, and a committee of university researchers and area veterinarians, we strive to provide the university and our industry with current information and future needs. The UKGERF biannual publication, The University of Kentucky Equine Research and Service Report, provides the industry with information from the Department of Veterinary Science, which includes research updates, current investigation information, researcher spotlights and available services. Our success has been due to industry support, financially as well as active involvement. The UKGERF board has been instrumental in securing financial support for four endowed chairs and professorships in the department. In addition, we have established endowments for general research funds, equipment needs and graduate student support. But, as industry needs increase, so does the cost of basic research and technology to meet those needs. Through a charitable contribution to the University of Kentucky Gluck Equine Research Foundation, you can become part of the effort to secure a sounder, healthier future for the horse and for the horse industry.
