Fire Management Today Offers its Services to Wildland Fire Safety

Abstract
Fire Management Today and its predecessors collectively now have a 70-year record of publishing on all aspects of wildland fire, including firefighter safety. The authors have served as coordinators and/or contributors for five special issues dealing with the Dude Fire Staff Ride, fire behavior, and prescribed fire published between 2002-2006. Wildland fire safety has been one of the underlying themes throughout all these issues.

Fire Control Notes and its successors, Fire Management, Fire Management Notes and now Fire Management Today (FMT), collectively now have a 70-year record of publishing on all aspects of wildland fire management, including wildland fire safety, thus fulfilling the journal’s original purpose (Headley 1936). Burton (2000) has identified and subject indexed all of the articles published between 1970 and 1999. Summary indexes were published by Fire Control Notes in 1942, 1955, 1963 and 1969.
Starting with Volume 57, Number 1 of Fire Management Notes published in early 1997, all subsequent issues have been posted for downloading off the internet at the journal’s website http://www.fs.fed.us/fire/fmt). This action has greatly increased the exposure of the journal amongst the global wildland fire management community. The collection of downloadable issues now extends back to 1991 (as of April 2006). In time, the entire collection of all issues will be available for downloading from the FMT website. This will be a very valuable resource to the wildland fire community.
The authors have served as coordinators and contributors for four special issues of FMT that featured previously articles from past issues of Fire Control Notes, Fire Management and Fire Management Notes (Alexander and Thomas 2003a, 2003c, 2004a, 2006a). Wildland fire safety has been a major theme throughout all these issues, including the introductory overview articles written for each issue by the authors (Alexander and Thomas 2003b, 2003d, 2004b, 2006b; Thomas and Cook 2002). One of us also served as the coordinator of a special issue on the Dude Fire staff ride (Thomas 2002) while the other wrote an essay on the staff ride concept in wildland fire behavior and firefighter safety awareness training (Alexander 2002, 2004).
This poster highlights the articles included in these special issues representing a total of 94 articles (Fig. 1). PDFs of these five issues of FMT can be downloaded from the journal’s website and are also being made available on the CD-ROM proceedings of the 9th Wildland Fire Safety Summit.
