About this Document

The citations in this bibliography pertain to the health, care and housing of selected wild/exotic birds owned as pets, raised as farm animals, or used for exhibition or research. Production birds such as chickens are not included but there are a few citations on ducks and turkeys which may have application to other birds in general. Birds bred and raised for research as well as all birds used for exhibition or sold by dealers are being brought under regulation by USDA, APHIS, Animal Care. It is hoped this updated publication provides a useful reference source for anyone handling or caring for birds.

Multiple sources were searched for citations published between the years 2004 to 2007. The sources of information include peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, theses, annual reports, dissertations, books, monographs, reviews, and patents. Readers are cautioned as to the dynamic nature of the internet and the fact that Web addresses and content are subject to change. All sites are current as of May 2008.

The National Agricultural Library (NAL) Services web page supplies information on how to request library materials that are included in its collection.

Web resources on the care and welfare of birds in research, exhibition, as well as those kept as companion animals, are provided on the AWIC Web site.
