Dr. James Miller Receives Weed Scientist of the Year Award
Asheville,NC -- The Southern Weed Science Society presented the 1999 Weed Scientist of the Year Award to Dr. James H. Miller, Research Forest Ecologist with the USDA Forest Service, Southern Research Station, Auburn, AL. He is the first forestry member of the society to receive this recognition. Dr. Miller was recognized for his outstanding achievements in research and technology transfer related to forest vegetation management science. This includes basic science and applied technology for the control and management of native and nonnative plants and shrubs in a forest setting, using techniques which are ecologically sound, economically viable and socially acceptable. He is widely known for his expertise on the control of kudzu and other exotic plant species. Dr. Miller was also recognized for his outstanding contributions to the society, which currently includes senior authorship of a book and field manual "Southeast Forest Plants and Wildlife Uses" (working title) due for publication in late 1999.
Dr. Miller is a native of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He received a BS in Forest Management from Oklahoma State University, an MS in Silviculture from Purdue University, and a Ph.D. in Forest Ecology and Environmental Toxicology from Oregon State University. He joined the U.S. Forest Service in 1977 and has been located since then at the USDA Forest Service, G.W. Andrews Forestry Sciences Laboratory on the campus of Auburn University. He is also an affiliate associate professor with the Auburn University School of Forestry. Dr. Miller and his wife Anne reside in Auburn, AL.
