Bruce Jewell Named As New Assistant Director Of Research--Pines At Southern Research Station


Asheville,NC -- Southern Research Station Director Pete Roussopoulos has named as the Assistant Director for Research – Pines. Jewell will be responsible for Research Work Units in Athens, GA, Auburn, AL, Saucier and Stoneville, MS, and Pineville, LA that conduct research in pine ecosystems, forest genetics, and insects and diseases. For the past two and a half years he has been the Deputy Regional Forester for State and Private Forestry with the USDA Forest Service Southern Region in Atlanta, GA. Prior to that he was the Acting Deputy Regional Forester for Natural Resources and the Director for Public Affairs for the Southern Region.

Roussopoulos said, "we are very pleased to have Bruce Jewell join the Southern Research Station; he brings a broad background in understanding National Forest System and private forest landownership concerns to our workforce. His experience as Deputy Regional Forester administering the Forest Health and Fire and Aviation programs throughout the South will be invaluable as we address current critical issues relating to invasive species and fire management."

Jewell, originally from Watertown, TN, holds a B.S. in political science from Middle Tennessee State University. He has been with the Forest Service since 1977, beginning his career on the Cherokee National Forest at Cleveland, TN as Public Affairs Officer.
