The Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program works primarily through competitive grants that are administered by four regions - North Central, Northeast, South and West. Each region is guided by councils that include farmers and ranchers along with representatives from universities, government, agribusiness and nonprofit organizations.

The councils, in turn, evaluate project proposals with help from technical reviewers assigned in each region. The technical experts are selected based on professional and practical experience.

Since 1988, SARE has funded more than 2,500 projects, including research and education grants, professional development grants and producer grants. Applicants also can propose projects under special grant programs for graduate students, community development practitioners and ag educators conducting on-farm research in some SARE regions.

For requests for proposals, application deadlines and other information, contact the SARE regional offices.
