Where: In southeastern Wisconsin, about 75 miles northwest of Milwaukee.

Habitat: The refuge has 21,417 acres of wetlands, upland grasslands, and oak-savanna remnants. In 1934 the marsh was reclaimed from earlier "muck farming." Horicon now encompasses a large part of the nation's biggest freshwater cattail marsh.

Wildlife: Tens of thousands of ducks, including the redhead, can be found here. Horicon boasts nesting American white pelicans as well as the state's largest great blue heron rookery.

Activities: Birdwatching, hiking, cross-country skiing, biking, environmental education.
