Objective/Intended Use

The purpose of this project is to evaluate data for use in children's risk assessments for Stage 2 D/DBPs rules. Project includes review and evaluation of new scientific information on DW exposures to children as well as dose and hazard.

Abstract

Current risk assessment policies for noncarcinogens accommodate sensitive populations by assuming a ten fold variability between the most sensitive member of a population and the average member. In order to characterize the risks to children associated with exposure to disinfectants and disinfectant by-products, data must be collected and evaluated relating specifically to children's exposures and hazards. Primary focus will be to compile and evaluate data related to children exposures and DBP and develop methods for quantitatively assessing those risks. Analysis of NHEXAS data to investigate drinking water consumption patterns for various age groups including children and the contribution of contaminant(s) from various drinking water sources(drinking water, beverages, cooking etc) will be conducted. Results will be used to improve drinking water exposure estimates (relative source contributions) and to identify specific sub-populations potentially at risk due to higher exposures and/or susceptibility. These data will be compiled into a child specific database. In addition methods will be developed and evaluated to scale PK Parameters for children vs adults in order that quantitative hazard assessments and risk estimates can be calculated for children.
