PROVINCE SUPPORTS ABORIGINAL CAREER FAIR TO HELP YOUTH ENTER CHANGING WORKFORCE

Culture, Heritage, Tourism and Sport Minister Eric Robinson, acting Aboriginal and northern affairs minister, today announced a $50,000 grant for the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation to help launch the 2009 Aboriginal Youth Career Fair called Blueprint for the Future.

“This fair has a strong record of helping Aboriginal youth enter the changing workforce,” said Robinson. “Students see and learn first hand about the possibilities for future employment at workshops and seminars in a number of areas such as health, business, science and technology.”

Students receive information and resources on career options, their educational requirements and employment trends.  Trade fair booths from both the private and public sectors provide additional information for those in attendance.

The career fair, being held today at the Winnipeg Convention Centre, is expected to attract up to 1,500 Aboriginal high-school students from across the province. The career fair will be hosted by the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation. Since 1996, the career fairs have been held each year in two Canadian cities, providing Aboriginal youth access to role models and information on employment and careers. The 16th annual National Aboriginal Achievements Foundation Awards gala will be held in Winnipeg on March 6.

The departments of education, citizenship and youth; advanced education and literacy; science, technology, energy and mines; conservation; culture, heritage, tourism and sport; Aboriginal and northern affairs; agriculture, food and rural initiatives; water stewardship; family services and housing; health and healthy living; competitiveness, training and trade; and infrastructure and transportation; and the Civil Service Commission all have contributed to the 2009 career fair.
