Since 1999 California FarmLink has organized succession workshops in over twenty California counties and in conjunction with five different state and national conferences. These workshops have been introductory in nature, with only 2-4 hours to begin to address complicated topics. We’ve had positive response to these workshops, with many attendees going on to complete transfers to the next generation. However, many others came to the workshops, went home and moved on to other things without advancing their farm succession planning. We wanted to design a training that would go beyond talk, to focus on helping participants take action.

In 2007 we hosted a comprehensive state-wide California Farm Succession Conference in Sacramento along with University of California Cooperative Extension and the Ag Leadership Program. Based on successful programs in the mid-west, the event allowed us to go deeper into the subject of farm business transitions. We encouraged participation of multiple generations from the same family farm or ranch and facilitated discussion, communication and teamwork among the attendees. The event was very successful. Over two weekends over 90 participants focused their attention on planning the long-term future of their family farms. We had representatives of three generations from a single operation! People drove as long as 250 miles to attend and registration reached capacity. Now we’re bringing that two-part, comprehensive succession conference to the coast. We’re offering the same program in three locations to facilitate attendance. We’re bringing some of the best speakers, with an improved format and new resource materials.

Who should attend?

  • Attendees of one of our previous workshops can refresh their thinking on farm succession, learn new tools and begin to draft elements of their plan.
  • Stakeholders from traditional family farms including: current owners, on-farm heirs and off-farm heirs.
  • Owners without an identified successor within the family can come alone or with a farm employee to consider transition options to a non-family member.

Please look at the enclosed brochure, talk to appropriate members of your family and business team and register soon. We have raised money to ensure committed stakeholders will be able to attend. Scholarships are available! If you have questions, call the regional contact listed below or on the brochure. We look forward to seeing you at the conference closest to you.
