“If you are looking for opportunities to make long-lasting personal and professional relationships, rapid advancement in your chosen career field, the chance to take on as much responsibility as you can handle, as well as a demanding and challenging work environment that is perpetually changing, you will find it with the GSA intern program. At least, that is what I found when I joined up as a GSA intern ten years ago.

During the past ten years, I have had the opportunity to plan product and trade expositions; write speeches for GSA Administrators; visit with customers all over the region; build relationships with peers in the Agency and in other Federal Agencies; develop national / international marketing campaigns, and most recently -- live and work in Europe.

The intern program was a great starting point for my career at GSA. It introduced me to key people within the Region who were responsible for making things happen. It also provided me with valuable contacts in other regions that are continually important in accomplishing my goals, as well as those of the Agency.

If you are looking for a challenge, and an opportunity, the intern program is a terrific place to start.”

“I spent almost 20 years as an architect in the private sector prior to joining GSA, and I have been very happy with my decision to move into government service. The best thing about working for GSA is the people, who are friendly, engaged, and committed to doing a good job regardless of the obstacles.

Working at GSA also affords me the flexibility to achieve a balance between work and personal commitments, with compensation and benefits that are as good as or better than those offered elsewhere.”

“Working at GSA has been an incredibly positive experience for me.  I came in through the Federal Career Intern Program and was immediately given many opportunities to grow and develop both professionally and personally through travel, training, and hands-on experience.

The flexibility that GSA offers is almost unmatchable as it provides autonomy, change, and a deep level of satisfaction.  I have had the opportunity to work with both internal and external customers which aids in my holistic understanding of the GSA mission and what it stands for.  GSA offers rare and valuable opportunities, and I am incredibly grateful and excited to be a part of it all.”

“The Federal Career Intern Program has been an exceptional experience for me because I have had the opportunity to be involved in significant projects, work with great people, and network with other interns.

I was given a lot of responsibility and autonomy from the start of my career and consulted with managers on various human resources issues.  I also received substantial training and rotated through different human resources functions, such as staffing, classification, employee relations, labor relations and a rotation to GSA’s headquarters in Washington DC.

I recommend the Federal Career Intern Program to anyone looking to enter government service or advance in their career.”

“What I enjoy most about GSA is my staff. The people and the magnitude of what I manage here makes GSA stand out from my previous positions. I was an electrician working at the Brooklyn Army Terminal when I heard that GSA needed people. I interviewed and was hired to work in Brooklyn.

Since then,  I have been able to transition through a series of increasingly more responsible positions until I was thoroughly familiar with the workings of a building manager's office. I then became an assistant manager and later a field office manager.

The fair consideration of my previous related experience allowed me to transition into a more professionally and financially rewarding positions. Working for GSA has made me proud of the level of trust and responsibility that has been bestowed upon me.”

“GSA is an agency that is vital to the mission of other federal agencies. I have been with GSA for 10 years and it feels great to see how my work contributes to aiding other agencies with their mission by fulfilling office space, services and supply requirements for everyday use and also during times of disaster such as the 9/11 attacks on NYC.”

“GSA has given me great training and career development opportunities rivaled only by very few employers I worked for in the private sector. An important  aspect of a good working environment are people, and I have been blessed to work with a diverse talented group of people in various skills and disciplines such as project management, business processes, contracting and engineering, to name a few.

At GSA, I am able to apply my skills to the job, see the results and be part of a great team.”

Marjorie Louis
Human Resources Specialist
New York, NY

“I came to GSA in July 2005 seeking an opportunity to pursue my career in Human Resources. After finding a posting on GSA Jobs for an HR Intern, I was able to pursue my goals.

I had previously worked for a non-profit organization so beginning a career with the Federal Government was a natural transition. Through my internship with GSA's Chief Human Capital Office, I have been afforded the opportunity to obtain valuable training, hands-on experience, and educational rotations throughout different areas in Human Resources.

I have participated in valuable projects and have had the chance to interact with key members of management. Along with the wealth of learning opportunities at GSA, I also have a chance for flexibility and quality of life that may not always be available in the private sector.”

“I am currently in my first job at GSA's Office of Civil Rights.  I interviewed for my position while I was in law school.

The flexibility of every other Friday off is a benefit of Federal employment.  Other Federal benefits, such as the TSP and our health benefits are also big incentives.  When I was studying for a standardized professional exam, I was able to work from home two days per week.

Working at GSA has enabled me to grow and develop skills by maintaining a partnership with regional offices, helping to run a national database, and working with other GSA offices on joint projects.”

David McDonald
Chief of Strategic Planning & Performance Branch
New York, NY

“I have had the pleasure of working for the United States General Services Administration since my graduation from College in 1991.  The organization has afforded me professional growth, as I have risen from a GS-7 to a GS-14.  I have also been granted diverse training opportunities in Contracting, Finance and the Advanced Leadership Development Program while being assigned many challenging and fulfilling projects during my career.

Where else could a then 26 year old be given an opportunity to address a public audience of 950 people in a presentation without being a 'Back Street Boy'?

In addition, due to the organization's family friendly approach, I have also been able to attend to both of my parents when they became ill and aid my brother and sister in law in adopting three wonderful nephews.

If challenge, growth, and family friendly environment is appealing in today's environment, perhaps GSA is an appropriate place for you.”

“As a Contract Specialist in the Federal Acquisition Services (FAS) Small Business GWAC Center, I have the opportunity to touch all facets of the acquisition process.

Contract Specialists must be aware of customer requirements and relationships in order to achieve results that best further the mission of agency clients.  As a Contract Specialist in the Small Business GWAC Center, I gain personal satisfaction by seeing small businesses excel in the Federal procurement arena.

The Center's main goal is to provide small businesses, which have historically been left out of the federal procurement process, an opportunity to compete in the federal marketplace.  Seeing this important goal achieved is very rewarding.”
