Floral and Nursery Plants Research Unit

Herbarium Exhibit

The National Arboretum Herbarium is a permanent reference collection of dried plant specimens necessary for taxonomic studies relating to agriculture, medicine, science, and education, fields where documentation and correct identification of plant material is essential.

Our 650,000 sheet herbarium is one of a few in the world with a primary mission of supporting taxonomic research and identification of cultivated plants and their wild relatives. This unique herbarium comprises a permanent reference collection of agriculture and ornamental plants including cultivars and hybrids, spanning a history of American agriculture and research. Be sure to visit our newly revamped "Virtual U.S. National Arboretum Herbarium" web pages.

We recently shared selected specimens that tell poignant stories of collection and research highlighting the rich history of the Herbarium of the U.S. National Arboretum at an exhibit in the Lobby of the Adminsitration Building. If you missed the June 1 through September 30, 2003 exhibit, you haven't totally missed everything, as we present below, for your review, images of those exhibited specimens.
