What is RSS? |

The impact of foodborne diseases on health in the United States is considerable. Statistics show that foodborne diseases cause approximately 76 million illnesses, 325,000 hospitalizations, and 5,000 deaths in the United States each year. CSREES seeks to reduce the incidence of foodborne illness and provide a safer food supply by supporting research, education, and extension activities addressing current priority issues and multiple disciplines in food safety. Some examples include food safety basic and applied research, antimicrobial resistance, consumer and professional food safety education, food processing technology, and food biosecurity.

• The Food Safety Contacts Directory provides contact information for national staff and university faculty working in food safety.
• The National Integrated Food Safety Initiative supports applied research, education, and extension grants addressing priority issues in food safety.
• CSREES held Post-Award Management Workshop for National Integrated Food Safety Initiative.
• CSREES is co-sponsoring the 2006 Food Safety Education Conference, Reaching At-Risk Audiences and Today's Other Food Safety Challenges.
• CSREES held Post-Award Management Workshop for Non-competitive Food Safety Grants
• CSREES supports research to understand disease-causing microorganisms in food.

Partnerships

• CSREES is a member of the Interagency Risk Assessment Consortium that communicates and promotes scientific research related to food and risk assessment.
• CSREES partners with other agencies and organizations in the Food Safety Training and Education Alliance, seeking to improve food safety training and education.
• In partnership with the Agricultural Experiment Stations, CSREES fosters research on high-priority topics relating to food science and technology.
