Attention!

The Northern Research Station has realigned our staff from 37 Research Work Units and Programs into 14 new Research Work Units.

RWU-4101 is now part of NRS-7, Center for Research on Ecosystem Change.

Our Mission

[Photograph]: This photograph shows a landscape view of northern hardwood and riparian forests in the Little Carp River watershed in the upper peninsula of Michigan. To develop scientific knowledge and management tools that help sustain healthy productive forests.

Our current research focuses on stand-scale ecology and management and landscape modeling.

Research

Our scientists examine questions about ecosystem phenomena at stand scales, and the effects of forest management on these phenomena, as well as larger scale questions about landscape pattern and cumulative ecological responses of stand-scale management. Major themes of our research include:

  • Science for sustaining ecological and forest production objectives
  • Modeling landscape responses to management scenarios
  • Long-term silvicultural studies

More Information

This site is currently under development as the Forest Service brings together the Northeastern and North Central Research Stations to form the Northern Research Station, serving the Northeast and Midwest. Check back often as we expand our site to reflect our combined commitment to supporting the natural resources and people of the Northeastern and Midwestern United States.
