NPS Devils Tower Volunteer-in-Park Maintenance

Position Description
INTRODUCTION: The incumbent of the position is responsible for: (1)the performance and completion of assigned tasks or duties, (2)informing the Chief of Maintenance of situations affecting the duties, safety and the maintenance operation of the park.

RESPONSIBILITIY: The Volunteer is under the supervision of the Chief of Maintenance, who provides verbal and/or written instructions on the basic work assignments to be accomplished. The Volunteer may be instructed or led by a maintenance division staff member during work assignments. The Volunteer is responsible for completing the work assigned without close supervision. Volunteer must have a valid driver's license.

Volunteer may be required to undergo a Background Investigation.

MAJOR DUTIES:1. Assist maintenance workers in performing repairs on buildings and utilities, roads and trails, signs, and grounds maintenance.2. May be working alone to accomplish list of assigned tasks/projects. Project list to be provided to Volunteer when being considered for the position. Project list to be approved by Volunteer and Chief of Maintenance.3. Uses hand tools (power tools can be used only with prior approval and verification of ability for proper/safe use) in performing assigned tasks, i.e., painting, carpentry, plumbing, road and trail repairs. May be working from ladder or other elevated platform.4. Will be working inside and outside. Weather conditions may include temperatures from 32 F - 100 F, wind, dust and rain. Work may include standing, sitting, kneeling, bending, and working in close, cramped areas.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The Volunteer may exert heavy physical effort in doing such tasks as lifting and moving objects weighing over 50 pounds. Have the ability to work in a variety of physical positions, on different surfaces and heights (from trenches to ladders and elevated platforms).

WORK SCHEDULE: The Volunteer is scheduled for 32 hours per week. Routine workweek consists of 4 days, with the schedule to be agreed upon by Volunteer and Maintenance Forman. Weekends and Government holidays are not worked.

Workday consists of 8 hours per day, from 7:30am to 4:00pm. Occasionally the Volunteer may be requested to work other shift hours, between 6:00am and 12:00 midnight, to assist with special projects.

LENGTH OF SEASON:The Volunteer would work between May and September. Actual length of appointment will be determined between Volunteer and park at time of selection.

REIMBURSEMENT:$7.00/working day for volunteer performing identified duties of a position.

WORK UNIFORM: The Volunteer will be required to wear the designated uniform items. Uniform items consist of hats, shirts, and pants. The park will provide uniform hats and shirts. Brown or khaki pants will be purchased by the volunteer and reimbursed by the park for actual purchase price up to $60.00.

RV SITE: The Park has graveled RV sites available with hookups for water, sewer, electrical (50amp/220v and 30amp/220v receptacles). Sites come with picnic table, and shade trees.

NPS HALE - Master Volunteer (HI RESIDENTS ONLY)

Master Volunteers are individuals who agree to provide a minimum of 500 hours of volunteer service (up front) to the park during the course of one year. They can have either general or specialized skills. There is no age requirement, though most projects available to reach 500 hours are appropriate for 15 year olds and up. The 500 hours can be reached by volunteering 10 hours a week, 1 week a month, consolidated into full-time for 12 weeks or other variations. NPS Bicycle Mechanic - Volunteer Bike Patrol Program

The C&O Canal Volunteer Bike Patrol Program is looking for a skilled bicycle mechanic to donate time at the Cushwa Basin Visitor Center, Williamsport, MD. Mechanic will perform maintenance on the bikes used by the Volunteer Bike Patrollers. Work will be performed at the Visitor Center. Bikes currently utilized include K-2 and Specialized mountain bikes with front suspension. Some have disk brakes.

NPS Trails Coordinator
C&O Canal National Historical Park (Potomac, MD)

Position Description
The park is seeking a candidate to serve as the Trails Coordinator for the park. This is a 12-month position with a stipend of $160.00 per week paid by the Student Conservation Association (SCA). Park housing is available in the Great Falls area of the park. SCA provides travel reimbursement as well.

The park has a network of trails in the Great Falls area, including the historic Goldmine Loop and the popular Billy Goat trails. These trails overlook or follow the Potomac River in the Potomac Gorge area of the park.

Duties include developing trail maintenance projects and presenting these for NEPA and NHPA review with park compliance committee. Mapping trails with GPS equipment and GIS software will be done as well. Trails Coordinator will evaluate all trails and provide recommendations on trail work based on established trail management practices. Trails Coordinator will work with volunteer groups to complete trail projects. This work includes all planning, obtaining all materials and tools, and supervising the actual work. The park has 2 summer crews from the SCA that the coordinator will supervise.

Requirements: Experience with trail construction, trail assessment, and supervising others. Undergraduate degree preferred. Ability to work in extreme weather conditions. The majority of trails work occurs in the summer. The area is subject to very humid conditions common to the Mid-Atlantic region. Ability to use a variety of hand tools for trails repair. Ability to communicate well with others is also required. Ability to work with groups is a must.

Trails Coordinator Application

FWS Fisheries General Assistance
Green Lake National Fish Hatchery (Ellsworth, ME)

Position Description
Location Description: Green Lake National Fish Hatchery is located in Ellsworth, Maine, less than an hour from Acadia National Park and is a restoration and ESA hatchery, raising endangered Atlantic salmon for restoration. The hatchery employs a full-time staff of eight and looks to recruit a volunteer to assist with busy seasons and basic hatchery work. Spring and fall are particularly busy times at Green Lake NFH. Position Description: Volunteers interested in fish culture and biology, facility maintenance, and the Gulf of Maine Atlantic salmon program would be especially interested in this position. Depending upon the season, duties may include assisting with hatching, rearing and distributing Atlantic salmon; assisting with daily cleaning of rearing tanks and preparing them for fish; helping to complete facility maintenance projects.

Unfortunately housing is not available for this position. We do offer an RV hookup (sewer/power/water) for any qualified individual.

NPS Chattahoochee River

Library Assistant:
Separate books, CD's and periodicals into categories with an electronic database system. Mark each item with the correct reference number and set up a check out system.

Volunteer Photographer:

Create a digital collection of photographs for use by park staff, for special requests and as a base for the production of park post cards.

Information Technician:

Keep all park bulletin boards current on a monthly basis. Clean and service park bulletin boards and trail signs as needed.

Guided Walk Interpreter:

Presents guided walk interpretive programs throughout the park. Develops information on each unit to answer questions, explain the history of the park and lead various guided walks.

Environmental Education Assistant:

Presents environmental education and interpretive programs throughout the park units. Assists in developing, maintaining and writing of environmental education and interpretive materials, lesson plans, and reports.

Scouting Programs Presenter:

Presents environmental education, interpretive, and scout advancement programs throughout the park. Assists in maintaining program materials, lesson plans and equipment.

Trail and River Trash Removal:

Remove trash along the park trails and the river and its tributaries throughout the park. Canoes, kayaks, rafts, and boats may be used for this activity.

Boundary Marker Assistant:

Assists rangers and resource management staff in locating and posting boundaries throughout the park. Knowledge of GIS is helpful, but not required.

Invasive Exotic Vegetation Removal:

Assist the park with the removal of such exotic vegetation as chinese privet, japanese honeysuckle, russian olive, mimosa, nepal grass, english ivy, etc. The park provides the equipment and supplies for small to large groups of volunteers to assist on these projects.

Streambank Restoration:

Assist the science and resource managers with performing streambank erosion protection measures by removing excess stabilization rock (riprap) and planting native vegetation. The park will provide all tools and plants.

Removal of Vegetation from Mill Sites and Ruins:

Mechanical and hand removal of vegetation in and around ruins. Roots should be completely removed. Specific guidelines for the removal of vegetation around sensitive cultural resources will be provided.

Computer Assistance:

Assist with data entry, word processing, map presentation and web page creation using a variety of computer software programs. Participants must complete Department of the Interior security and ethics training prior to using government computer systems.

Natural and Cultural Resource Data Collection Assistance:

Assist in collecting data involving natural and cultural resources in order to better understand and properly manage the park resources.

Student Conservation Aide:

Assists the park science staff with a variety of projects including the following: collect GPS data and entering the findings into the park GIS system; coordinates in park stream surveys to collect physical, chemical, and biological data; conduct natural resource surveys and studies.

Forest Restoration:
Reclaim open field areas by planting native plants.

Administrative Clerk:
Assist the administrative division with a variety of duties related to budget and finance as well as general support to other program areas.

Mail and File Clerk:
Opens and reads mail and decides routing by subject matter. sorts and routes mail to 30-40 distribution points. Receives materials and files by subject matter. Makes photocopies and maintains a variety of office equipment.

Visitor Center Assistant:
Opens and closes the visitor center. Fills all brochure holders and cleans the counter and displays. Answers questions, provides orientation/information concerning the park units and surrounding areas. Participates in the sale of annual permits and all three types of park passes. Keeps records of all transactions.

Laborer:
Assists in rehabilitation of buildings and structures. Assist park maintenance staff with general construction and maintenance activities required in daily operations of the park.

Trail Maintenance Worker:
Assists the trail crew staff with maintenance and construction of trails including brushing the trail corridors and drainage structure cleaning. Tasks include the following: step construction, retaining wall construction, sign placement, building split rail fence and other related duties.

FS Visitor Center Assistant

VISITOR CENTER ASSISTANT

WORK TO INCLUDE:

Receptionist-type work in providing various forms of information/interpretation of Forest use policies and regulations in conjunction with state laws to Forest visitors utilizing Forest system lands and facilities on the Heber Ranger District.

Being actively and enthusiastically involved in our frequent interpretive programs at the Strawberry Bay Amphitheater using many individuals and agencies for a myriad of subject matter for entertainment and education of our Forest visitors.

Light custodial duties including, but not limited to, the following: vacuuming, removing and replacing trash liners, washing windows, re-stocking of supplies and physical cleaning maintenance of public restrooms, replacing light bulbs, dusting, etc. etc.

Inventory and ordering of bookstore materials. This work is mainly cash register use and completion of deposit forms directly related to the sales of bookstore items at the Visitor’s Center weekly.

Boardwalk maintenance: The Visitor’s Center interpretive program utilizes a boardwalk system which comprises of about 1500 of boardwalk trail in riparian zones immediately adjacent to the V.C. The boardwalk system will need from time-to-time, incidental clean-up, repairs, and maintenance. One such duty may include treating the boardwalk with linseed for example.

Landscaping: The arena of landscaping in Strawberry is fairly mundane, because of the altitude and temperature, the grass needs mowed only about twice a month with a ride-on-mower and use of a weed trimmer around concrete edges such as sidewalks and curbs.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Volunteers should anticipate working under the above mentioned conditions 4 days per week. Work days will usually consist of a minimum of 4 hours, and not exceed 8 hours.

PROVIDED FOR THE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM:

The Heber Ranger District will, in the form of a reimbursement for incidental expenses accrued by the volunteer, offer a space for residential purposes with full hook-ups complete with power, water, and sewer. An occasional refueling of propane cylinders will also be provided by the Heber Ranger District. Additionally with these reimbursements, a government owned vehicle (contingent on availability) and fuel provided may be obtained at the Strawberry warehouse for the carrying-out of official tasks and duties only. Also in addition, when situations permit, the Heber Ranger District may provide housing close to the duty station.

WORK SEASON:

The work season will begin in May (at least 2 weeks prior to Memorial Day weekend) and carry through when possible to the 2nd week in October. Our busiest time is September for the annual spawning of the Kokanee Salmon. Many school and public-related tours are given through this time period.

FS Campground Host

Position Description
Campground Host: Shafer Butte Campground is located 20 miles north of Boise, near the Bogus Basin Ski area. Elevation is 6,800 feet. The area offers a more remote location for the adventurous volunteer.

The Host responsibilities include general clean up and minor maintenance of 14 camping units; 2-days use group areas and assistance with posting of reservations and collection of visitor statistics. Electricity is not available. Propane, sewer, water, radio, tools and supplies are provided. Subsistence is provided. Volunteer furnishes own self contained trailer. Trailer space is limited to a 20 foot RV.

As a Campground Host, you will typically be expected to greet campers; give directions, answer questions, and hand out pamphlets if available; help campers feel at home; perform minor maintenance and inspect the campground; possibly clean and/or stock restrooms; keep some records; and occasionally fill out forms. A Host must work well with people, be personable and neat in appearance. You may be required to be on-site five days per week, especially on weekends and heavy use holidays. A Host must generally be physically able to perform some raking, shoveling and sweeping. The most important job as a Campground Host is to provide an enjoyable camping experience for the public. The Host is the first and sometimes the only contact with campground users.

NPS Redwood National and State Parks Trail Crew

Work within the parks among some of the world's tallest trees and along the Pacific Coast. Weather will range from cool and rainy to sunny.

Position Description
Trail crews work year-round in the parks. Due to the threatened and endangered species within the park, a measurable amount of work needs to be done by non-powered tools. Training is required to use power tools, if approved.

Trail maintenance involves moderate to heavy laboring tasks, clearing brush with hand tools, removing downed tree rounds and limbs, repairing footbridges, and digging drainage ditches with a pulaski, mcleod and shovel. May include activities such as litter pickup, repairing and installing water bars, rehabing trail tread or brushing, and non-native plant species removal.

Volunteers must be able to read and follow verbal instructions; move around well enough to work safely, be able to hike up to 8 miles a day, and have the ability to work well with others, including visitors and co-workers with diverse interests and views.

Limited free co-ed dormitory style housing may also be available, depending on space; dorms cannot accommodate couples or pets. VIPs must serve a minimum of 32 hours per week to qualify for free RV site or lodging. Be sure to bring proper footwear.

NPS Volunteer Gardener/Maintenance

Introduction:

This is a part-time, temporary volunteer position located at Fort Frederica National Monument, St Simons Island, GA. The incumbent performs non- supervisory work requiring knowledge of gardening procedures and he/she possesses various industry skills described below. If performed in a paid status would be considered grade 5 in the 5003 wage grade series. >p>A. MAJOR DUTIES

Volunteer gardeners in this position require knowledge of gardening procedures and skill in growing and tending to lawns, flowers, shrubs, and trees. Volunteers are told which plants to tend and the nature of work to be done, and they may complete their assignments with little review during its progress. New or unfamiliar procedures are explained. Completed work is checked to see that instructions have been followed.

1. Volunteer gardeners do seasonal gardening tasks according to direction.

2. Volunteer gardeners work includes preparing soil, seeding, thinning, transplanting, trimming, pruning, aerating, and mulching of grass, ground cover, and plants such as ornamental flowers, shrubs, and trees.

3. Volunteer gardeners work in a safe manner, recognizing safety implications of the immediate environment, those working around him/her, and the visiting public.

4. Volunteer gardeners may periodically remove leaves and other debris from landscapes, formal gardens, and specimen plants.

5. Volunteer gardeners may apply common fertilizers under supervision and according to directions.

6. Volunteer gardeners may use common hand tools, such as shovels to dig and rakes to grade in normal performance of work.

7. Volunteer gardeners may, with appropriate age, skill level, and consent, operate power tools.

8. Volunteers of appropriate age and license may operate vehicles such as golf carts, utility vehicles, and pickup trucks to transport supplies, equipment, debris, etc.

B. FACTORS

1. Skill and Knowledge Required

•The worker must be able to follow oral and written instructions.

•The worker shall know how to do seasonal gardening tasks, such as preparing soil for planting, placing plants at proper depth and taking care not to damage roots while transplanting, watering plants, pruning and trimming plants, removing Spanish Moss.

•The worker shall be able to use a variety of hand garden tools and equipment such as rakes, shovels, pruning shears, hedge trimmers, wheelbarrows, seeders in a safe manner.

•If of age, the worker shall possess a valid state operator’s license if operating on and off road motor vehicles such as a golf cart or pickup truck.

2. Responsibilities

In transplanting, the volunteer shall carefully handle roots of plants to insure continued growth in the new location.

The volunteer is responsible for all tools assigned and practices safe handling and use of tools and equipment around oneself and others. Tasks must be performed in the safest possible manner to avoid hazardous situations that may result in personal injuries or property damage. The volunteer shall leave the work area clean when finished task and return tools to proper location for storage.

The volunteer, as a representative of the National Park Service, shall obey all park policies, rules, and regulations.

The volunteer performs under the leadership of a member of the Fort Frederica National Monument staff. Quantity and quality of work shall be checked by inspections by the staff supervisor. The supervisor is available for advice and guidance during the work session.

3. Physical Effort

The duties of this position require a considerable amount of bending and stooping, frequent walking, standing, pushing of carts and wheelbarrows, and may require lifting up to 30 pounds. Please arrange for help with supervisor if personal lifting limits are reached. The work often requires the volunteer to reach and/or work above head level.

4. Working Conditions

The volunteer works indoors and outdoors during all seasons of the year. In working outside the gardener is subject to discomfort from long periods in the hot sun with high temperature and humidity levels that are normal throughout the summer. The volunteer should be aware of fast approaching summer storms and seek shelter in an enclosed area. Being exposed to dirt, dust, and mud, the volunteer should consider wearing protective clothing such as gloves (provided), sturdy shoes, and long sleeve shirts. In addition, the volunteer may be exposed to disease carrying biting insects such as ticks, mosquitoes, deer flies, and gnats.
