Western Larch on the Tally Lake Ranger District

Stretching along the west side of the continental divide from the US Canadian border south approximately 120 miles lies the 2.3 million acre Flathead National Forest. The landscape is built from block fault mountain ranges sculpted by glaciers, and covered with a rich thick forest. By providing abundant recreation and a wealth of natural resources, the Flathead is a perfect place to relax and enjoy your National Forests!

Personal Use Firewood From National Forest Lands Requires Permit

Gathering and cutting firewood on the Flathead National Forest requires a personal woodcutting permit. A permit may be obtained at any Flathead National Forest office or from several vendors in the area. more

The Hungry Horse Ranger District is considering fuel reduction treatments on National Forest System (NFS) lands extending along the Highway 2 corridor from the Nyack Flats area east to the Giefer Creek vicinity. more

Belton Fuels Reduction Project

The Decision Notice and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the Belton Fuels Reduction Project was signed October 30, 2008. This project will treat approximately 1,824 acres of National Forest System lands within a larger project area generally extending between the towns of Hungry Horse and West Glacier, and from the Middle Fork Flathead River east to the Belton Point/Desert Mountain ridgeline. more


Soldier Addition Project

Spotted Bear Ranger District of the Flathead National Forest is requesting comments on the Soldier Addition Project. Please provide specific written comments addressing the proposed action by November 7, 2008. more


Sheppard Creek Post-Fire Project

The Tally Lake Ranger District of the Flathead National Forest has completed a record of decision and final environmental impact statement for the Sheppard Creek Post-Fire Project. The project is in response to the 2007 Brush Creek Wildland Fire located approximately 20 miles west of Whitefish.
