Description: Southern pulpwood production in 1971 totaled 41,913,816 cords-67 percent of the Nation's total. The region's production was down slightly (about 1 percent from the previous year) for the first time in 13 years. During the year, two new mills began production and 20 others increased their capacities. These expansions boosted daily pulping capacity in the region by 5 percent, to 87,496 tons. At the end of the year there were 109 pulpmills in the region, with three more under construction.
