Imports and Interstate Transportation of Black Carp Banned (Oct 18, 2007)

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service added black carp (Mylopharyngodon piceus) to the list of injurious fish under the Lacey Act. This action will prohibit live black carp, gametes, viable eggs and hybrids from being imported into or transported between the continental United States, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or any territory or possession of the United States.

PREISM program

USDA Awards $950,000 to Research Against Invasive Pests (Oct 12, 2007)

Six research projects in four states were selected to help identify effective means to prevent the introduction of invasive plant pests and animal diseases through the Program of Research on the Economics of Invasive Species Management (PREISM).

Phragmites australis

The invasive strain of Phragmites australis, or common reed, believed to have originated in Eurasia, exudes from its roots an acid so toxic that the substance literally disintegrates the structural protein in the roots of neighboring plants, thus toppling the competition.
