Major Plant Conference Set This Week in Oregon

CORVALLIS, Ore. – A leading group of botanists and plant experts from around the world will meet in Oregon this week at the 19th New Phytologist Symposium, to discuss the explosion of knowledge in recent years about genetic controls of plant processes, agricultural advances and many other topics.

The professional conference is co-hosted and organized by researchers from Oregon State University, along with other academic institutions and several private companies. It is titled “Physiological Sculpture of Plants: New Visions and Capabilities for Crop Development.”

The event will be held from Sept. 17-20 at Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood, and more information can be found on the web.

Major advances have been made in knowledge about the genes that influence regulatory pathways in plants, controlling such things as flowering, plant growth and stress tolerance. The meeting will explore how this knowledge might be used to create further advances in plant breeding, biotechnology and genetic engineering.

Topics will include agriculture in the developing world, use of agriculture to mitigate climate change, tools for future crop development, understanding stress tolerance, and other issues.

About Oregon State University: OSU is one of only two U.S. universities designated a land-, sea-, space- and sun-grant institution.
