American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education Honors OSU Professor

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University professor Brad Cardinal was named a fellow of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education at its annual meeting in Savannah, Ga., on Sept. 29.

Cardinal is a professor in the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Sciences at OSU. He was selected to speak on behalf of the nine newly inducted fellows at the meeting.

The academy is regarded as the most prestigious society in the field and election is by member nomination only. Nominees must have made significant, sustained and high-impact contributions to the fields of kinesiology, or the study of movement, and physical education during their careers and lifetime.

Cardinal’s research and scholarship look into the psychosocial and socio-cultural factors associated with physical activity and exercise behavior change, promotion, and retention.

During the past 10 years, Cardinal’s research has been cited in many research papers and government reports, including the landmark Surgeon General’s report on Physical Activity and Health released in 1996.

Cardinal’s leadership activities include service as president of the Research Consortium of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Chuck Corbin, a professor emeritus in exercise and wellness at Arizona State University, is one of the researchers who nominated Cardinal.

“In addition to his significant accomplishments in our field, he is known for his integrity and his willingness to help his colleagues and his students,” Corbin said.

There are about 150 active fellows in the academy. Other active fellows employed at OSU include: Jeff McCubbin, a distinguished professor and associate dean, inducted in 1998; and Christine Snow, a professor inducted in 2002.
