Animal Sciences, Crop & Soil Science Departments Celebrate 100 Years


CORVALLIS, Ore. - A series of evening lectures at Oregon State University will launch the centennial celebration of the Department of Animal Sciences and the Department of Crop and Soil Science.

The lectures, which are free and open to the public, explore the future of scientific research in the two fields.

A keynote presentation will be held June 2 at Austin Auditorium in LaSells Stewart Center featuring Mike Martin, president of New Mexico State University. His talk, “Land-Grant Universities of Tomorrow: Remaining Relevant and Responsive,” begins at 10:30 a.m. Other talks in the celebration will all begin at 7 p.m. in Withycombe Hall Room 109. They include:

Tuesday, Feb. 6: “The Benefits of Genomics in Food Production – and Related Issues,” by Ronald L. Phillips, Regents’ Professor, University of Minnesota;

Tuesday, March 6: “The Changing Relationship of Humans and Animals: Where Is It Going?,” by John Hodges, professor emeritus of animal genetics, University of British Columbia;

Tuesday, April 3: “The Future of Public Lands in the American West,” by Thad Box, professor emeritus, Department of Wildland Resources, Utah State University;

Tuesday, May 1: “Are Soils Endangered?,” by Ron Amundson, professor, University of California–Berkeley.
