Description: Pulpwood production in the South increased 8 percent during 1983, compared with a 4-percent decline during the previous year. The production 56.6 million cords was a record high for the 12 Southern States (table 1). Softwood roundwood accounted for 46 percent of the total output, hardwood roundwood 21 percent, and byproducts 33 percent of the pulpwood furnish. For the first time since 1967, all 12 of the Southern States had an increase in total production. Georgia was the leading producer of pulpwood, followed by Alabama and Mississippi. Oklahoma had the greatest percentage increase (19 percent), but Georgia had the largest actual increase (844, 900 cords).
