Description: The symposium on the management of longleaf pine leading to these proceedings was held on April 4 through 6, 1989, in Long Beach, MS, at the Gulf Park Conference Center of the University of Southern Mississippi. This conference was attended by approximately 170 land managers, wildlife managers, researchers, educators, students, and others interested in longleaf pine. Nineteen papers were presented and an all-day field trip was conducted for attendees during the two and one-half day meeting. Subject areas varied from longleaf pine facts and fallacies to the economics of managing its stands. Authors followed the review procedures of their organizations, supplied their papers in a requested format ready for reproduction, and the proceedings editor checked each paper for completeness, and reasonable format compliance. The objectives of the symposium were to summarize current technology on regeneration, management, and utilization of longleaf pine, and to promote the species as an integral part of squthern forestry. Longleaf pine stands have been declining in acreage due in part to difficulties in regeneration. This symposium presented technology and operatioria1 examples of how those difficulties may be overcome or minimized. The subject matter should have particular application for the management forester and will have general application for researchers , educators, planners and administrators. The most recent previous conference on this subject was held on October 17-19, 1978, in Mobile, AL (USDA Forest Service. 1979.
