Description: The purpose of this workshop was to allow remote sensing experts from Latin America, the U.S.A., and FAO to discuss state-of-the-art methodology in remote sensing of forest environments, and to develop plans on how to better incorporate this technology into FAO and national forest inventory efforts. The workshop included numerous presentations of ongoing activities, as well as discussion of possibilities for sustaining and improving our ability to monitor forest change through remotely sensed data. These proceedings include several items of interest. Some of the presenters chose to submit written versions of their presentations, which are included. There are also several pages of notes from four working groups assigned to debate various relevant issues, as well as a letter from several of the Latin American delegates expressing their suggestions of actions needed to improve the use of remote sensing of forest conditions. We hope that these proceedings will serve as a reminder and as a starting point for the continued improvement of remote sensing capabilities and products throughout Latin America.
