Regional issue description: High nutrient concentrations are one of the major sources of impairment of inland and coastal waters within Region 2. Several nutrient management projects are underway as an element of the regional program, including: measuring in-stream nutrient concentrations in Puerto Rico; developing and making accessible nutrient management tools (including state phosphorus indexes to help manage the application of nutrients on agricultural lands) and advancing the management of onsite wastewater treatment systems throughout the region (also a significant pathogen issue).
