The National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research, in conjunction with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), held a Workshop to Develop a Research Agenda on Appropriate Settings for Rehabilitation on February 14–15, 2005 at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  As a consequence of the discussions at this workshop and between CMS and NIH staff, CMS wishes to alert investigators engaged in medical rehabilitation research to the following statement:

CMS recognizes the need to enhance the evidence base for clinical practice, and will work with providers and research groups to encourage the design of clinical studies that meet NIH standards.  CMS will also work with researchers conducting NIH-approved studies so that they can meet their study objectives within the overall framework of the Medicare program benefit.
