Madame CJ Walker Broach

This Madame CJ Walker pin was donated to National Museum of African American History and Culture during the inaugural Save Our African American Treasures program at the Harold Washington Library Center in Chicago. Mrs. Walker presented trophies such as this to the top employees in recognition of hard work and dedication in selling and marketing her company’s hair and beauty products.

NMAAHC’s inaugural exhibition Let Your Motto Be Resistance: African American Portraits examines 150 years of American history through a stunning collection of photographs drawn from the collection of the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. It has traveled to New Orleans and Los Angeles and is open through March 1, 2009 at the Charles Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit.

Events and Updates

The National Museum of African American History and Culture will sponsor and participate in a variety of programs in the days leading to the inauguration of President Barack Obama on January 20, 2009.

In partnership with the Center for Folklife and Heritage, we present Giving Voice to Hope: Renewing America’s Promise on January 18 and 19. This storytelling program addresses the journeys taken by African Americans and the meaning and importance of hope. Download further details on the program, time and location here.

On January 19, to celebrate the inauguration and the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we invite you to witness six college debate teams arguing the priorities of the new Obama administration. These three debates, presented in cooperation with the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), will touch on many of the challenges faced by our new president.
