Cactus Moth (Cactoblastis cactorum)

Divider

Spread of C. cactorum in the Continental US

C. cactorum was either spread to the Florida peninsula by natural dispersal from Caribbean islands or was imported on infected nursery stock. It was first found on Big Pine Key in 1989. Subsequently, university and USDA researchers maped its spread along both coasts in Florida and eventually to South Carolina. It was found on Dauphin Island, Alabama in the summer of 2004 and on Petit Bois Island, Mississippi in January 2008.
