About OALS

The Office of Arid Lands Studies (OALS) is a multidisciplinary research, instruction, and knowledge transfer unit in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Under the direction of Dr. Charles Hutchinson, OALS addresses issues surrounding the sustainable use of drylands, both in Arizona and throughout the world. Dryland environments present both exciting opportunities and serious challenges for sustainable development:

  • Opportunities arise from the numerous resources that are uniquely available in drylands, derived both directly from the hot, dry climate, and indirectly from the varied adaptations of plants, animals, and humans to this climate.
  • Challenges result from drylands' high temperatures, extreme climate variability, limited plant and water resource availability, and the high costs of overcoming these constraints.

Throughout its history, beginning with its establishment at the University of Arizona in 1964, OALS personnel have conducted a wide variety of activities, both within the United States and internationally, funded by a variety of agencies, in collaboration with a number of other University of Arizona departments. These activities are in the following program areas:

Operationally, there are 4 Divisions within OALS

In addition, there are the following affiliated groups that are housed in the OALS offices
