Alabama
Micro-Irrigation
Meets Plasticulture
Alabama NRCS hydraulic engineer Ken Aycock practices what he preaches. Ken is
involved in the EQIP Limited Resource Farmer (LRF) Micro-irrigation/Plasticulture
Project. Ken has worked on projects like this before. In 1988, NRCS
cooperated with local sponsors to develop the Chandler Mountain Watershed
Project.
New Jersey
Soil
Scientists Studying Area
Fifty soil scientists from the 18th World
Congress of Soil Science (see Word from Washington) took a bus trip to the
Phillip E. Marucci Center for Blueberry & Cranberry Research in Washington
Township, New Jersey. "New Jersey is probably one of the best
places in the world to study soil because within a few miles you can get such a
variety," said New Jersey NRCS soil scientist Chris Smith.

NRCS at 18th World Congress of Soil Science
NRCS was one of two major sponsors at the
18th World
Congress of Soil Science held this week in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. This unique international event, held in a different city
every four years (last held in the U.S. in 1960),
featured presentations by thousands of soil scientists from around the world on
such topics as climate change, soils and health, urban planning, crop
production, hazardous waste, and more. NRCS Chief Bruce Knight offered welcoming remarks at the
opening ceremony on Monday.
The NRCS Soils Division staffed a booth
and organized poster presentations at the event where agency
soils experts from across the U.S. spoke. A special exhibit, Soils — the
Foundation of Life, was produced by NRCS Legislative and Public Affairs
Division designers Bob Gresh and Jennifer Oh especially for the event.
