Food
for America
For the past four years NRCS and others have organized the Food for America
outreach program for Athens, Texas, fourth-graders. This year, youngsters
rotated through seven stations designed to show students where their food comes
from and how it is produced.

Provides Adequate Water Source in West Virginia
Residents in West Virginia’s southern Randolph County will soon have a reliable
source of drinking water thanks to the NRCS Elkwater Fork Dam Public Law-566
project. The Upper Tygart Valley River Watershed dam project will soon
supply safe drinking water to 21,500 Randolph County residents.

Provides Tribe with Land Resource Map
NRCS recently provided the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska and Iowa with a land resource
map of their reservation lands. A similar map was also presented to the
Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. Tribal leaders indicated the map coupled with other
land and water information will aid the Tribe in better managing their lands.

USDA
Selects Proposals for Wetlands Reserve Enhancement Program
NRCS Chief Bruce Knight has announced that five partnership proposals will
receive $10 million through the Wetlands Reserve Enhancement Program to restore,
enhance, protect, and manage habitat for migratory birds and other
wetland-dependent wildlife.

Exhibiting on the National Mall Event This Week
NRCS
participated in Public Service Recognition Week (PSRW) activities on the
National Mall this week. The event, celebrated the first Monday through Sunday
in May since 1985, is a yearly opportunity to recognize the good work of public
servants and to honor the men and women who serve America as Federal, state and
local government employees.

to Showcase NRCS Conservation Security Program
Soil
conservation has always been an important part of how farmers Charlie Hammer and
Nancy Kavazanjian manage their land in southeastern Wisconsin. Practicing
no-till since 1985, Hammer and Kavazanjian were able to enroll in the NRCS
Conservation Security Program (CSP) as a Tier II farm in 2005.In northwest
Wisconsin, the Mikelson family farm qualified as a Tier III farm, thanks to
their many conservation practices on their dairy operation.

Delegation Touring Plant Materials Centers
A delegation from China, composed of specialists in water, soil conservation and
plant buffers, visited NRCS Plant Materials Centers (PMC)
in Tucson, Arizona; Beltsville, Maryland; and Lockford, California to learn more
about best
conservation best practices.
