Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates is traveling.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England has no public or media events on his schedule.

Secretary of the Army Pete Geren and Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen.Richard Cody will swear in goal-breaking Soldier-recruits for the active-duty Army, National Guard and Army Reserve at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, 4 Oct., at the Jefferson Memorial to help meet and complete this Fiscal Year's national Army recruiting mission - including more than 80,000 new active-duty Soldiers. The event will feature about seven recruits -- including some from the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Md., region -- taking the oath of service to our Nation, either as new recruits or re-enlisting Soldiers, with their families. The Army also will be offering a van departing from the Pentagon shortly after 8 a.m. to the event.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, Central Asia Affairs, Office of the Secretary of Defense, Policy, Mitchell Shivers, Director, Iraq, Middle East Policy, Office of the Secretary Defense, Policy Alan E. Van Egmond and Deputy Director for Politico-Military Affairs, Asia Strategic Plans and Policy Joint Staff, Maj. Gen. Bobby J. Wilkes, USAF testify at a hearing of the House Armed Services Committee on the role of the department of defense in Provincial Reconstruction Teams in Afghanistan and Iraq at 9 a.m. EDT in room 2212 Rayburn House Office Building.
 
Director for Operational Planning, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Maj. Gen. Richard Sherlock, will brief at 1:30 p.m. EDT, Oct 4, in the DoD Briefing Room, Pentagon 2E579.  Journalists without a Pentagon building pass will be picked up at the North Parking Entrance only.  Plan to arrive no later than 45 minutes prior to the event; have proof of affiliation and two forms of photo identification.  Please call (703) 697-5131 for escort into the building.
