Today in the Department of Defense, Wednesday, February 13, 2008

Secretary Robert Gates will not appear before the House Appropriations Committee as originally scheduled today due to a fracture to his right shoulder sustained when he slipped on some ice.
 
Deputy Secretary Gorden England will testify in his place on the Defense fiscal 2009 Budget and Secretary of the Army, Pete Geren will be the lead DoD witness before the Senate Armed Services Committee on improvements in the care and management of wounded and ill service members.
 
Secretary Gates has been examined by a physician and is receiving treatment for this injury. He continues to perform all other duties and responsibilities of his position.

 

 Deputy Commandant for Combat Development and Integration Lt. Gen. James F. Amos and Deputy Commandant for Aviation  Lt. Gen. John G. Castellaw testify at a hearing of the House Appropriations Committee on USMC readiness at 2 p.m. EST in room H-140, The Capitol.

Director of Security Office of the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Counterintelligence and Security Greg Torres testifies at a hearing of the House Armed Services Committee on Readiness at Risk: Department of Defense security clearance processes at 2 p.m. EST in room 2118 Rayburn House Office Building.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England, Secretary of the Army Preston M. (Pete) Geren III, Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness David S.C. Chu and Surgeon General of the United States Army Lieutenant General Eric B. Schoomaker testify at a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee on improvements implemented and planned by the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs for the care, management, and transition of wounded and ill servicemembers at 9:30 a.m. EST in room SH-216, Hart Senate Office Building.
