Today in the Department of Defense, Oct. 21-23, 2000

Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen and Secretary of the Navy Richard Danzig will honor retired Navy Master Chief Carl M. Brashear, a Navy master diver, following a special screening of the motion picture Men of Honor on Saturday, Oct. 21, in Washington, D.C. See the advisory for details.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Rudy de Leon is in Washington this weekend. There are no public or media events on his schedule.

25,000 runners are registered to participate in the 25th Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday, Oct. 22. The race starts and ends at the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Va.

The Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services is holding its fall 2000 conference through Oct. 22 in Las Vegas. See the news release for details.

Red Ribbon Week, showcasing a series of anti-drug awareness and educational activities in American neighborhoods and schools, begins Monday, Oct. 23, with an opening ceremony and awards presentation in the Pentagon.

The next Department of Defense news briefing will be held Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 1:30 p.m. in the DoD briefing studio, room 2E781. The briefer will be Kenneth H. Bacon, assistant secretary of Defense for public affairs.

The Combined Federal Campaign is now in progress throughout the Department of Defense.
