Manuel Macías
Manuel Macías was the Spanish Governor General of Puerto Rico in 1898. One of his major acts
was the inauguration of the newly granted Autonomous Charter for Puerto Rico. During the final Spanish withdrawal from the island in October 1898, Gov. Macías was honored with 21-gun salutes and a flag display. He was succeeded by Gen. Ricardo Ortega, who presided over the final days of Spanish control of Puerto Rico and took part in the shifting of power to the U.S. military.
