Many of New Jersey's historic sites are in the hands of private individuals, home and business owners who respect the historic character of their houses, stores, mills, and farms and are committed to preserving the history by maintaining these unique structures.

Private individuals do not qualify for loans or grants from the Historic Trust.   The Historic Trust does offer two programs that may be attractive to home or business owners who want to preserve the beauty of their property in perpetuity, and possibly take advantage of charitable tax credits.

New Jersey Legacies
Through the New Jersey Legacies program, the NJ Historic Trust accepts charitable donations of real property, which are protected by preservation easements and sold to preservation-minded buyers. Donors may realize significant tax advantages, and have flexibility regarding the mode of donation. Read more about this program.
Preservation Easement Program
Through the Preservation Easement Program, the NJ Historic Trust accepts charitable donations of easements, which are legal restrictions that protect historic property from demolition and inappropriate alterations. Donors may realize significant tax advantages. Read more about this program.
Other Resources for Private Home or Business Owners
The proposed  Historic Property Reinvestment Tax Credit would provide homeowners and corporations with an economic incentive to help revitalize older neighborhoods and reuse historic structures by providing a New Jersey state tax credit for their rehabilitation.

The Preservation Toolkit is a free collection of preservation briefs and planning materials presented by Preservation New Jersey. The toolkit is designed to address preservation questions in a readable and user-friendly way.
