About The Artwork
Each recipient will receive a framed image of a marine species reflective of the resource and/or region benefiting from the stewardship contributions they have made. Commissioned in the 1880s by the U.S. Commission of Fish and Fisheries, predecessor of the National Marine Fisheries Service, these unique images are part of a collection comprised of 532 copper etchings developed as part of a study undertaken to capture the state of the American fisheries at that time and to use the knowledge gained as a baseline for future studies. As NOAA prepares to celebrate 200 years of science and management, these images signify the long-term commitment to marine science and management and the important role it has played in our American heritage.
